Our final film. Mirrored-Past.

This is our final video and my last post, Mirrored-Past.

Comparison between our original video and our new one

In order to receive a good mark and have a back up in case we wanted a change, we decided to make two openings with different ideas and different story lines. We had many changes to make for our final video however, according to the audience feedback our Second opening (our current one) was better than our original one.  We were told the camera work, editing and storyline was much better than our original movie even though the pair had their good parts.  Our first movie was about a girl who was haunted by her past life and this caused the death of two teenagers, although we used the enigma code in this movie also, our audience feedback said that the original had bad camera work and an unclear confusing storyline that wasn't understood within the opening whereas our current video was said to have effective camera work as well as a storyline that started off confusing yet became clear throughout the opening and ended with a cliffhanger which everyone thought was very effective. We decided to keep our title credits and our production company logo as we thought that these were also very effective and were edited at a good standard. We also completed pre-production for both of our movies but when we decided to stick with our new opening we kept the pre-production of this opening.

What some of the audience said (Within the target audience) ;
"I like the new opening better than the old one" - Rachel Michele
"The old film was good but the new one has a more appealing concept to me"- Stacey Fennessy
"I think that you'll get better marks from the new opening, I really want to watch the film now!" - Jamie McDougall

We hope that watching both will be enjoyable.

Evaluation Question 7

Looking back at your preliminary task (the continuity editing task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Within my preliminary task I began to edit on programs such as Final cut pro and adobe after effects, this allowed me to have experience when creating my Thriller opening, this also allowed me to feel comfortable to edit sounds and camera angles together within these programs, since the preliminary task I have been able to create a more effective use of editing in order to make credits and add special effects.

I have improved a lot, as even our costumes were wrong within the preliminary task. for example on our first take we realized that some of the character's clothing and hair styles changed within the scenes, we used some of the shots that we used within our preliminary task, however I think that we used the angles more effectively, for example using the P-O-V shot within the preliminary task was done very shaky as we used a handheld camera which wasn't good quality, in our Thriller opening we decided to use a HD camera in order to have good quality as well as a tripod to keep the pod shot still.

We also animated the credits and added extra objects and linked this to the storyline rather than the credits being blank and just scrolling down like it does on the preliminary task. We had music in our preliminary task, however the music didn't really suit the storyline and wasn't really in synch. In our main task I think that we used music quite effectively as we placed it to cause a dramatic effect and to make the scene seem more tense. We made sure to keep using the 180 rule in which we learnt from our preliminary task this allows the editing to go smoother.

These were all things that we did wrong in our preliminary task and we took account of these and used it to make our thriller opening better.

Evaluation Question 5

How did you attract/address your audience?

Evaluation Question 4

Below is a video of Aj evaluating my film and explaining her point of view of how Maslow's Hierarchy is shown within the film itself.

Below is Amy Jane Briggs' evaluation of my film

Deniz's film has been an amazing production, consisting of a lot of hard work and effort.  I particularly enjoyed the special effects and how the opening was put together, ensuring it was an amazing piece of work. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in Supernatural or Psychological Thrillers and would love to watch it again or see the whole thing! In terms of Maslow's Hierarchy I feel the film affects  me in the Safety and security stage as seeing someone being attacked or thinking that these things may exist makes me quite uneasy, paranoid and even insecure. I think that the opening reached it's aims and as a target audience member I felt that it met my needs and I was very intrigued.

Treatment

Our film, Mirrored-Past is within the genre of a Psychological Thriller/Supernatural Thriller about  somebody who must cast a spell to go back in time after seeing a Premonition of his friend dying from a  picture of her friend. Will he be able to stop the death and go back to help her? Or will more go wrong by going back and changing the past? Our opening is designed to create an eerie feeling in order to make the audience feel unnerved through a series of confusing clips and clues causing the audience to subconsciously add up these clues and come up with their own conclusions, however they won't expect what comes next. The audience will be kept in the dark throughout most of the opening as the concept will become more clear throughout the actual movie.

After our production logo our opening begins with the main character searching through a chest of drawers and finding a picture with a date on the back, he then has a premonition seeing the death of this girl where she is strangled. He then decides to go back in time by casting a spell once he gets back he attempts to stop the death. As all things happen for a reason he was not allowed to change the past as it was a fixed point in time but by breaking the rules of time he must face the consequences.

Our group decided on this storyline through a series of different ideas, our original idea was very different from the end idea. We were inspired by an episode of Charmed and one of our old ideas. We chose this idea as it's very mysterious and involves several different suspenseful clips which mould together to create fear and confusion putting the audience on the edge of their chair. Our questionnaires and research told us that people like Thrillers as they're usually quite scary and jumpy and put the audience on the edge of their seat, our opening does exactly this.

We chose an old art gallery to film at as we thought it looked quite old and eerie.  The lighting of the location was also dark and quite dim meaning that it was perfect for our film. This creates a sense of mystery and fear as if the location was bright and cheery this wouldn't have the same effect.

Our Thriller opening conforms to Thriller conventions as Thrillers are supposed to use elements such as suspense and elements in order to stimulate a certain view or mood into an audience or viewer. It aims to give them high levels of anticipation as well as Uncertainty, anxiety and even terror. Some Thrillers aim to give the viewer an adrenaline-rush. These are all elements that we aimed to include within our Thriller opening.
