Thriller Sequence Comparison

  • Identify 4 thriller sequences
  • Working off of last lesson's analysis, explain how you identify an opening sequence
  • Be sure to include what is common about them in terms of:
  1. Lighting
  2. Music
  3. Titles+credits
  4. Transitions
After viewing many thriller opening sequences, I can now make the assumption that some of the aspects of the analysis of the opening sequences can be common in each of the openings.

The Ring
The opening of the ring is one that could be confusing to the audience and could draw them in. We can tell that the Ring is a thriller from this opening as it jumps straight into a dark scene on a rainy night where the audience is dragged into the action by the suspense of whats going on and makes us want to know more almost gluing us to the screens.

Shutter Island

The opening sequence of Shutter Island is quite plain but very mysterious as it is quite simple. It has a black background with a metal typed theme in the text. Alltogether it's quite dark and the music is quite tense itself.  As the light hits the writing discretely a slight shadow appears.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
In my opinion the opening to The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is possibly one of the weirdest openings i've ever seen.  I starts off dark with throbbing music and begins to show some sort of oil-like liquid falling. The music begins to get more lively as the liquid begins to take over the title of the film. Which is quite metallic. Throughout the whole opening the background is dark and black as well as what is seen within the opening itself. The only other color that is basically seen is that of a fire that begins to erupt out of the abstract person's body in the form of a dragon. The oil-like liquid begins to take over a person's lips, eyes and face spreading through the persons body and what seems to be a keyboard. The camera then shoots up to a match which is lit up and is falling from the sky, the fire sets the person which may be covered in oil after the person separates from another, we then see a person burning and turning into bone. A Phoenix seems to arise after the fire which may connote to showing rebirth or immortality. The figures then begin to fight and punch each other and one seems to show a power which may be Plant-Kinesis/Geo-kinesis which allows the user to have control over elements within earth such as plants or soil. Plants begin to grow as the figure is focussing and then begins to use a swarm of insects to attack the other person, it seems like there is a battle happening.

 Coraline
This is another weird opening, it's made to give off a Materialistic feeling as the film was made using dolls. All the text has a stitching type of material and the background itself isn't too light. It's quite eerie. The scene then becomes a doll coming through the window and being grabbed by a pair of creepy metallic hands. These then completely remake the doll by taking it apart. The stuffing is taken out which could connote to being the doll's soul. The doll is then given new stuffing and is sewed back into place to make the main character which may show part of the film and foreshadow that an innocent girl steps into another world which is different in many ways and is trapped there where they're all dolls. We're kept in the dark of what the machine is but we see it make the doll and the location is dark and eerie. The shadow of the 'machine' is also shown in a way which would be expected to be a murder in the genre of a Thriller.
